From October 6 until December 23, "Dancer" by Ewerdt Hilgemann is on view at Royale Projects in Los Angeles. Hilgemann’s "Dancer" was created by vacuuming air from the polished stainless steel structure to capture a moment of implosion.
Ewerdt Hilgemann (1938) was born in Witten, Germany and after briefly studying at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University in Münster, he attended Werkkunstschule and the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken. In the 1960’s he had residencies at Kätelhöhn Printers in Wamel, Asterstein in Koblenz and Halfmannshof in Gelsenkirchen, Western Germany, and started to exhibit his work across Europe before moving to Gorinchem, The Netherlands; and has had public installations from Busan, Korea to the City of West Hollywood, CA. Since 1984 the artist lives and works in Amsterdam.
Celebrating its one-year anniversary in downtown Los Angeles, Royale Projects puts the spotlight on a group exhibition titled "Shine Time" to consider themes of finish, sensation, perception, and subjectivity in the main gallery. Through various materials and surfaces that are reflective, metallic, and monochromatic, this exhibition includes mixed media, neon, paintings, and sculptures by Ryan Campbell, Alejandro Diaz, Ewerdt Hilgemann, Karen Lofgren, Ken Lum, Kristin McIver, and Rubén Ortiz Torres.
Royale Projects: Contemporary Art (established 2008) is dedicated to building world-class collections and the aggressive career development of its represented artists. Museum quality exhibitions and site-specific projects have fostered the growth of new ideas by emerging and mid-career artists working in experimental and alternative mediums as well as those who innovate time-honored traditions. The gallery focuses on the history and continuing advancement of West Coast abstraction in painting and sculpture as well as on leading edge artists that find their roots in Conceptualism while revering the significance of the art object.
