From September 8 through October 2 Micky Hoogendijk's "Dutch Mistress" will be on view at Sur Le Mur, Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. Sur Le Mur also presents the national debut of "Through The Eyes of Others" the first book of Hoogendijk's photographs.
The exhibition "Dutch Mistress" is an ode to the Dutch Masters and the naked emotion of a portrait. In "Dutch Mistress" photographer Micky Hoogendijk presents portraiture reflecting the concealed vulnerability and beauty of her subjects. Her work is characterized by sharp iconic images that reveal the power of naked emotion and vulnerability through innovative printing technologies. This creates images with incredible depth and richness. She questions existence and life by exploring themes such as religion, androgyny, and mythology.
A recurring theme in the photographs of Micky Hoogendijk is that she sees herself through the eyes of others. This book tells her personal story in images, where her doll house, dreams, memories, reality and fiction, models and gender play an important role.
The book explains her process, methodology, and creative inspiration. It contains 148 pages with her photographic art work from the past four years. It is, among other things, an ode to Hoogendijk's mother, who gave her the camera she now uses just before she passed away.
"The starting point of my work is an encounter, dream or object that culminates in an explosion of ideas. On set, I allow my model’s instinct and personality to melt together with my camera and drive my creative inspiration." - Micky Hoogendijk
Art has always been an essential part of Micky Hoogendijk. Born in Amsterdam in 1970, Hoogendijk grew up immersed in an international environment of art; surrounded by artists, art dealers, theater makers, actors, and dancers. She comes from an art family and spent years in front of the camera as an actress and model. She has also been the wife and business partner of postmodern artist Rob Scholte and creative director of Supperclub.
In 2009, Micky Hoogendijk received a last gift from her ailing mother: a professional still camera. The gift would change her career forever. By 2010, living and working again in Los Angeles, Hoogendijk discovered her gift for artistic portraiture.
Nurtured by the life of the international art world and memories of the Old Dutch masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt, Micky Hoogendijk takes the beholder on a journey into her universe: a dynamic and inspiring realm where visual arts, technology, and theater melt together into photography.
Hoogendijk has been showcased at exhibitions in Austin, Bogota, Cologne, Houston, Istanbul, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Santa Fe, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Washington.
