Dr. Jaap Jacobs will discuss Dutch settlements in the Hudson Valley on October 10 at the ‘The Handel-Krom Lecture‘, Hudson River Valley Institute, Marist College.

His most recent book is The Colony of New Netherland: A Dutch Settlement in Seventeenth-Century America. The lecture will explore the essential role that the Hudson River played in Dutch colonial culture, how the colonists perceived it, and how it was used as a resource.

Dr. Jacobs teaches history at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and is one of the leading authorities on the history of the Dutch. He has taught at the University of Amsterdam, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University. He has published widely on New Netherland and New Amsterdam, including The Colony of New Netherland: A Dutch Settlement in Seventeenth Century America (Cornell University Press, 2009). He is currently working on a biography of Petrus Stuyvesant.
