“In Context: Girl with a Pearl Earring,”

In Vermeer’s work, women depicted alone or women depicted with men as accessories play a central and compelling role. Vermeer’s refined manner of painting and his subtle interpretation of subject matter affect our response in profound and sometimes unanticipated ways, raising the question of what might be personal in his work, or invented, or borrowed from other artists. In this context, participants will study Girl with a Pearl Earring from the Mauritshuis and the three paintings by Vermeer from the Frick’s permanent collection.

Walter A. Liedtke, Curator of European Paintings, The Metropolitan Museum of Art  will lead this seminar, hosted by the Frick on January 13, 2014, 3 – 4:30 p.m.
