About Marike van Dijk
Marike van Dijk has been residing in Brooklyn for the past few years, writing and performing her music. Hailing from the Netherlands, she has built an audience for her original music in both the U.S. and Europe. Van Dijk’s sources of inspiration for her music are quite diverse; German and Austrian expressionist painters (Like Kirchner, Die Brücke, Schiele) Nature (The Dutch and Frisian countryside) New York’s vibrant jazz and pop music scene and a wide palet of classical music (from romanticism to avant-garde and contemporary classical). This results in lyrical, organic sounding music.Van Dijk initially moved to New York in 2011 to pursue a master’s degree at New York University (NYU) for which she was awarded a full scholarship. She manages to build an audience in New York, with a performance at the famed Blue Note jazz club as one of its highlights. Aside from many performances in Brooklyn and Manhattan, she is an integral part of an improv dance group and she is part of the BMI jazz composers workshop. During her time at NYU, she studied filmscoring, avant garde jazz, modern classical and of course, modern jazz music. She was selected to represent the NYU jazz department during a tour in Costa Rica. Van Dijk’s debut album ‘Patches of Blue’ (2010) led to several young talent jazz prizes, a performance at the world famous North Sea Jazz festival, an invitation to be part of the European Jazz Orchestra and several international tours.
