Rafaël Rozendaal in technology-inspired exhibition at Pablo’s Birthday

Group exhibition LikeNewLandscape at Pablo’s Birthday includes work by Dutch artist Rafaël Rozendaal.

LikeNewLandscape is the debut exhibition of FRONT COMPANY Presents, a travelling platform for contemporary art produced by the New York City based curatorial agency FRONT COMPANY. For its first exhibition, FRONT COMPANY organized an exhibition focused exclusively on artists working in digital mediums. LikeNewLandscape will be on view at Pablo’s Birthday  from September 13 to October 26, 2014, and includes the work ‘Neo Geo City’ by Dutch artist Rafaël Rozendaal.

LikeNewLandscape is an exhibition featuring nine leading artists of a generation working in an age defined by a new Technological Revolution, for whom computing and the internet have radically expanded their ability to use new tools and mediums. For the first time, these artists are using digital mediums to further extend the idea of landscape into a new realm of experimentation- pushing the boundaries of art and creating new virtual realities.

Video game inspiration

Landscape- from the Dutch landschap- has a meaning that includes a panoramic view of the scenery; in that spirit, LikeNewLandscape presents a diverse group of artists whose approaches range from the internet-based abstractions of Rafaël Rozendaal, to digital interventions in the landscape by Brenna Murphy, to the video game inspired virtual worlds of Tabor Robak.

Landscape- and by extension, the depiction of the world around us- has survived millennia as an artistic subject and device because the role it serves has been continually reinterpreted and reinvented by artists. Since the Greek and Roman Empires the artist’s use of landscape has undergone periodic transformations- particularly at critical junctures of human cultural and technological development. The Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, the advent of photography; each has precipitated a shift in how artists depict and interpret the world around them.

Art in daily live

FRONT COMPANY is a curatorial agency founded by Mark Brown and Pip Deely combining technology and nontraditional business models to probe the boundaries between art, technology, and commerce. Focusing on commercial clients, partnering with artists and technologists, and engaging in curatorial collaborations, FRONT COMPANY aims to integrate art into our daily lives.

LikeNewLandscape is located at Pablo’s Birthday, 57 Orchard Street in New York, a three-level gallery space housed in a former tenement building in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
