New York design office SO-IL reveals plans to conceive a concrete art gallery in Brooklyn.
New York design office SO-IL, led by Dutch architecht Florian Idenburg and his partners Jing Liu and Ilias Papageorgiou, has revealed plans to conceive a concrete art gallery, Artes Amant, in an industrial Brooklyn neighborhood. SO-IL calls the building “an exploration in soft form,” the idea being that a group of shells will act to diffuse an exterior presence while shaping the building’s interior as well. “The self-supporting geometry of these shells exists in tension with programming, light, and circulation.” Natural light is captured by the shells and transmitted into an edgeless interior causing the perception of defined space to be challenged. The building’s exterior is characterized by edges and seams that slip in and out of appearance. The building’s suppleness plays with ambiguity and legibility, making it neither monumental nor prosaic, but enticing. Construction is expected to be completed in 2017.
Led by partners Florian Idenburg, Jing Liu, and Ilias Papageorgiou, SO-IL is a design office that combines extensive experience in the fiels of architecture, academia, and the arts. The office has worked on many projects ranging from the master plan of a cultural campus in Shanghai, China, to a series of prints for the Guggenheim Museum. Other projects include the flagship store for Benetton in NYC, the Shrem Museum of Arts at the University of California in Davis, and the Frieze Art Fair in NYC.
