Three Films Selected For Dutch Submission Academy Awards

On September 2nd, Dutch films “Import”, “Tonio” and “Parade” were selected for Oscar submission by an EYE International independent film committee. 

Charlotte Scott-Wilson’s “Hold On”, produced by OAK Motion Pictures, already qualified for the Oscars by winning the Best Narrative Short Award at the TriBeCa Film Festival. Therefore, this film also has a chance to win an Oscar® for Best Live Action Short Film. The film is about Kyra, a young, talented cellist who suddenly develops stage fright after one of her cello strings comes lose during an important performance. The documentary “A Family Affair”, a film by Tom Fassaert and produced by Conijn Film, qualified as well for Best Documentary through US distribution. In this documentary, Fassaert travels to South-Africa to reconnect with his grandmother. 

Tonio

Feature Film “Tonio”, directed by Paula van der Oest , has been selected for Foreign Language Feature Film submission. The film is a production of NL Film, in coproduction with NTR, Zilvermeer Producties and Nanook Entertainment and was supported by Nederlands Filmfonds, Netherlands Film Production Incentive and CoBo Fonds. Starting September 22, Tonio will be shown as a limited release in a selection of Dutch cinemas , and will be in all cinemas starting October 12.

In “Tonio”, Twenty one-year old Tonio is hit by a car and taken to hospital in a critical condition. He dies shortly afterwards. The lives of his parents who had to watch their only son die in intensive care are transformed drastically. His death leaves them with a phantom pain – everything around them serves to remind them of him. They mourn, but at the same time have to try to prevent their own lives being drawn into a downward spiral of sorrow.

Import

Short fiction film “Import,” directed by Ena Sendijarević, has been selected in the Live Action Short Film category. The film is produced by Pupkin and was made possible with Netherlands Film Fund support. “Motion” had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors’ Fortnight). Meanwhile, the film has been selected for more than 20 international festivals, including DokuFest – International Documentary and Short Film Festival (Kosovo, winner for Best International Short Film), Toronto International Film Festival – TIFF (Canada) and the BFI London Film Festival (Great Britain).

In IMPORT a young Bosnian refugee family ends up in a small village in the Netherlands after getting a residence permit in 1994. Absurd situations arise as they try to make this strange new world their home.

Parade

Short animated film “Parade,” directedy by Digna van der Put, has been selected for Oscar submission in the Animated Short Film category. “Parade” had its world premiere at the London International Animation Festival, last December. After that, the film was selected for several leading international festivals, such as the Brussels Short Film Festival (Belgium), Annecy International Animated Film Festival (France) and the Melbourne International Animation Festival (Australia). In autumn the film will be screened at Filmets Badalona Film Festival (Spain) and the Anima Mundi Festival (Brazil). 

In “Parade,” six fanfare flute players explore the landscape of the uniform. A journey that does not go unscathed.
