The Girl and Death

The Girl and Death is a story about the impossible love between Nicolai and the courtesan Elise. A love that is obstructed by materialism, wealth and the threat of death. The film, based on an original script by Jos Stelling and Bert Rijkelijkhuizen, tells the story of the Russian doctor Nicolai, who returns to an old hotel, the place where he first met his great love half a century ago and relives his romantic tragedy. A large part of the film is set in the late nineteenth century, and the action takes place in an abandoned hotel/sanatorium in Tannenfeld, Thuringia, where most of the film was also shot. The hotel still bears the traces of an impressive past. Eventually, it becomes clear why Nicolai has really returned.

About Jos Stelling

Jos Stelling (1945) is an internationally renowned director and received several important film prizes for his work. ‘The Girl and Death’ is his thirteenth feature film. Besides being a director, Stelling is the owner of two independent film theatres in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He has a beloved presence in Russia, Italy and throughout Eastern Europe and received wide praise and won many awards for his films over the years including ‘The Pointsman’, ‘The Illusionist’, ‘The Flying Dutchman’ and ‘Duska’ (Official Dutch submission for 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar). Stelling’s unique cinema is based on idiosyncratic humor, stunning images and large emotions. Like the great classic plays of Anton Chekhov and poetry of Alexander Pushkin, ‘The Girl and the Death’ is a story about a love obstructed by materialism, wealth and the threat of death in a time that seems to exist miraculously outside of time.
