On March 28, 2PM EST, the New Gallery Concert series, featuring works by American-Dutch composer Vanessa Lann will be re-broadcast.

The performances includes her 2018 piano quintet One/Life.
One/Life received its American video-première on January 16th, by musicians Katherine Winterstein, Rose Drucker, Ashleigh Gordon, Francesca McNeeley and Sarah Bob, in collaboration with visual artist Rashon ‘Rah-Lik’ Briggs. During this exciting program put together by the New Gallery Concert Series, there are wonderful performances of great new pieces by a diverse group of composers, along with visuals and dance. One/Life was originally commissioned for the 2019 Brundibar Arts Festival in Newcastle-Gateshead (UK), an event honoring artists who perished during the Holocaust, and celebrating those who survived.

There will also be a pre-concert YouTube talk at 7pm CET (1pm EST), where Vanessa Lann will be speaking with Sarah Bob (pianist and Artistic Director of the New Gallery Concert Series), as well as the family of Hanni Begg, about the piece and its inspirations:

American premiere of piano quintet ‘One/Life’ by Vanessa Lann at New Gallery Concert Series

A piano quintet by Dutch-American composer Vanessa Lann will be featured during the 20-year anniversary concert of the New Gallery Concert Series: FROM THERE TO HERE, which will take place, online, on January 16 at 8pm EST.

Vanessa Lann’s piano quintet One/Life will receive its American première, performed by Katherine Winterstein, Rose Drucker, Ashleigh Gordon, Francesca McNeeley and Sarah Bob, in collaboration with visual artist Rashon ‘Rah-Lik’ Briggs. The piece was commissioned for the 2019 Brundibar Arts Festival in Newcastle-Gateshead (UK), an event honoring artists who perished during the Holocaust, and celebrating those who survived.

Lann’s work was inspired by the extraordinary biography of Hanni Begg (1929-2017), who as a young girl living in Berlin managed to escape the camps, eventually starting a new life and family in Great Britain after the war.

Vanessa Lann

Vanessa Lann (NY, 1968) studied composition at the Westchester Conservatory of Music, Harvard University and Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Lann works in the Netherlands as a composer, university professor (Webster University Leiden: musicology, mathematics, Eastern philosophy, multimedia) and visiting composition lecturer (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Utrecht).

Lann’s work is performed in venues all over the world including the Berlin Philharmonie, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw and De Doelen. Commissioned by renowned soloists, ensembles and festivals, her music is featured on more than ten recordings and is published by Donemus. Her most recent CD, moonshadow sunshadow, is a compilation of pieces from the past 25 years, on the ATTACCA label (ATT 2015146).

Lann’s music uses the repetition of recognizable figures, as well as structures based on number ratios and patterns, to explore concepts of continuity, infinity and silence, incorporating ritual and humor while placing every-day sounds and gestures in unusual contexts.

She recently received the 2019 Buma Classical Award for being the most-performed Dutch composer worldwide.
