Fri, Apr 21 - Sun, May 14  2017

From April 21 until May 14, Anouk Kruithof will participate in the group show ‘Life is Conditional’ at the MA Curatorial Practice at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

About the exhibition

The exhibition is curated by Jovanna Venegas. ‘Life in the Conditional’ takes a look at the theory proposed by the anthropologist Victor Turner on liminality and ritual forms and how this can serve as a lens to analyze our current sociopolitical condition. Currently, there is a complete dissolution of order, and fact and fiction have bled into each other. Venegas peers into various narratives and forms that artists are deploying, with expressions ranging from defiance to the comic and sometimes frightening.

In a moment of a complete dissolution of order, where fact and fiction have bled onto each other, what narratives and forms is art taking? The exhibition ‘Life in the Conditional’ presents artists that are focusing on and examining the ambiguous, malleable, grey space, found in liminal and blurred boundaries, and the potential within these spaces to create new forms, new languages, and new orders that resist dominant, patriarchal structures, which at a sociopolitical moment of precarity such as this, are equally trying to reshape and strengthen themselves.
