Rus Like Everyone Else
A secretary struggles to make human connections, an industrious immigrant lives in his van, an elderly woman escapes into the reality of her favorite soap opera, and at the center of it all is a young man named Rus, who has to take part in society for the first time after receiving a bill for overdue taxes, something he hadn’t really known about.
Abandoned by his mother and left with just a debit card and an illegal apartment, Rus is forced to capitulate to the demands of society and finds an office job with the help of a micromanaging new girlfriend. Meanwhile, the rest of the lonely ensemble around him searches for meaning in a complicated and alienating world under the watchful eye of the local postwoman. Debut novelist Adriaanse brilliantly weaves together intersecting lives to create a mini-epic, one that charts a hidden resistance to corporate sameness and artificial relationships.
Bette Adriaanse is a writer and visual artist. She received her MA in Creative Writing from Oxford University in 2010. She has published fiction in magazines for literature and philosophy, and exhibits her visual work internationally. “Rus Like Everyone Else” is her first novel.
