Once a month Claire Fleury Atelier pops up in a different location. This time, it’s at Regina Rex Gallery on December 13th and 14th. Hannah Barrett and Regina Rex Gallery have invited Claire Fleury to do a trunk show, in conjunction with Hannah Barrett’s exhibition ‘Rustics’.
Her figures, bedecked in resplendent if idiosyncratic attire, unabashedly seek pleasure and leisure in pastoral settings. In turns ironic and ridiculous, her abstracted and stylized subjects are engaged in image construction and self-display, sporting fur chaps, breeches, dirndl dress, and frock coats, analogizing the construction of painting space with contemporary gender expressions.
Claire Fleury ventured from dance and theater into fashion design, and makes clothing that is both festive and wearable, using bold patterned fabrics and designs based on classic cuts from a variety of origins and time periods. Scottish, Japanese, Dutch, Moroccan influences, from renaissance to ’77 punk, are present in the one-of designs that are all handmade by the designer. ‘Her creations are at once punk rock and haute elegance’ writes David Noh for Gay City News.
The trunk show will be open 12-6pm, with a reception on Saturday at 4pm, and on Sunday there is an artist talk with Hannah Barrett, Benny Merris and Claire Fleury at 2:30pm. Regina Rex Gallery – 221 Madison Street NYC [F-train to East Broadway]
