Mural ‘Aarde’ is a monumental, site-specific installation made of wool from heritage sheeps. May 14 2017 – April 2017

Sat, May 14 - Sun, Dec 4  2016

For the new SFMOMA open May 14th 2016 Claudy Jongstra created a monumental, site-specific mural installation: Aarde. This large-scale textile mural works in evocative contrast to the hard-edge materials of the museum’s building, creating a unique passage that marks SFMOMA’s architectural history through the designs of architects Mario Botta in 1995, Mark Jensen in 2008, and Snohetta in 2016. The exhibition runs until April 2017.

About ‘Aarde’

Using wool from heritage sheep she raises in the Northern Netherlands, Dutch designer Claudy Jongstra creates visceral landscapes of texture and color. For Aarde, Jongstra applied Bay Area minerals to hand-dyed wool. This large-scale textilemural works in evocative contrast to the hard-edge materials of the museum’s building, creating a unique passage that marks SFMOMA’s architectural history through the designs of architects Mario Botta in 1995, Mark Jensen in 2008, and Snøhetta in 2016.

About Claudy Jongstra

The Dutch artist, Claudy Jongstra (1963) creates art pieces and architectural installations from hand felted material. The beauty of nature, raw materials and the exploration of crafts such as spinning, carding and weaving constantly inspire Jongstra to bring a sense of beauty and belonging to public spaces. She works together with architects and clients around the world to create unique and tactile pieces.

Working in an autarchic creation process is essential for the creative process. Comitted to the value chain of creation, they raise their own sheep, keep bees, cultivate a botanical garden and grow their own plants for dyes. They leave no waste, respect nature and exemplify their philosophical values of utilizing local resources and traditional skills.

Claudy Jongstra’s oeuvre is founded on ethical values. Her work and life are inspired by stewardship, the promotion of bio-diversity and the preservation of a natural and cultural heritage. Together with her team, they constantly explore how to create a softer, more human atmosphere. Enjoyment, time and dedication are the most important ingredients in creating these works of art.
