Composer Michel van der Aa part of 21c Liederabend festival, Brooklyn

What was the most decisive moment in your life? That is the essential question in Michel van der Aa’s opera After Life. The opera introduces us to characters that are about to trade their earthly existence for perpetuity in heaven. They are allowed to relive a key moment in their life one last time in the form of a film, and subsequently take it with them to eternity.

After Life will be part of the 21c Liederabend festival at BAM, Brooklyn, November 23 2013. Over the course of two evenings—with each featuring a distinct, dynamic program—video artists and lighting designers are paired with luminaries from the New York and international new-music scenes.

Michel van der Aa (1970) is a truly multidisciplinary figure in contemporary music. A unique voice, he combines composition with film and stage direction, and script writing. Classical instruments, voices, electronic sound, actors, theatre and video are all seamless extensions of his musical vocabulary.

“One of the most distinctive of the younger composers in Europe today. His ability to fuse music, text and visual images into a totally organic whole sets him apart from nearly all his contemporaries.” (Andrew Clements, The Guardian)
