This title sequence from House of Panic director Kim Taylor brings to life a phantasmagoria of genetic experimentation gone nasty. Spinning a cinematic tale in a short, sharp slice of biological horror it asks: What twisted horrors is mankind capable of creating once he learns to manipulate nature to his depraved will? The titles set the scene for the bi-annual Amsterdam event Panic Room, featuring talks from inspirational creatives spanning multiple fields. This special 18th edition also coincides with the rebirth of The Panics as a company, formerly known as PostPanic.”

From Rotterdam, the band Iguana Death Cult started off with making “giddy, hard-hitting garage punk and a miasma of acid-drenched psychedelics, only to blossom into an all-embracing unit that implements frameworks of post-punk, krautrock, new wave, soul and disco.” If that doesn’t sound interesting, we don’t know what does anymore.

Panel Discussion: Cities for Humans: Scaling Solutions for Health

Sunday 03/15, 9:30 am – 10:30 am at JW Marriott, Salon AB, 110 E 2nd Street.
The panel consists of but is not limited to:  Evelyne de Leeuw (Centre for Health Equity Training Research and Evaluation / CHETRA aan de University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australie)

“The diseases that humanity faces today are very different from a century ago. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide. The rise of NCDs has been driven by risk factors, as physical inactivity, tobacco use, harmful consumption of alcohol, and unhealthy diets. Considering that people will live 120 years, it’s important to rethink our behaviour to minimize these risk factors. We need to establish collaboration and find solutions to prevent diseases and improve population health in a sustainable way. The speakers will show initiatives where the use of technology, big data and design help us to reshape urban environments and health systems to enable this transformation and move faster for a future with a healthier society.”

Meetup: Gentrification & Inclusive Smart Human Cities

Sunday 03/15, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm, at Hilton Austin Downtown, Room 410, 500 East 4th Street.
With Professor Christel de Maeyer from TU Eindhoven.

“In general, today we see a disappearance of a middle class society. The world is in a big shift going through a digital revolution and globalization. In addition, lots of people are on the move, fleeing their countries for several reasons: climate change or political climate, to name a few. Cities need to prepare for diversity and growth being socially inclusive. As San Francisco or the bigger area Silicon Valley is the epicenter of these digital changes and developments, it suffers the most from the gap between rich and poor. We will use this case as a conversation starter to look at the future of smart human cities. With the evolution of technologies today, we can measure almost everything. How are we going to use these technologies wisely and transparently, including ethics and accountability?”

Panel Discussion: Doing Responsible AI: Labs, Trusts & Standards

Monday 03/16, from 11 am – 12 pm, at Hilton Austin Downtown, Salon B, 500 E 4th Street.
The panel consists of but is not limited to Ben Zevenbergen from Princeton University.

“We’ve all read the news articles and heard our most prominent voices espouse the need for ethical and responsible AI, but what does that actually look like? This panel will explore how we can, and need to, move beyond discussions, whitepapers, and even principle setting to ensure AI systems are being designed, built, trained, and managed in a way which reflects our ethical expectations. This unique group of researchers and industry leaders are each working on tangible solutions for the quantifiable evaluation and protection of AI inputs, most notably the data and algorithms that are fueling these systems. Through the establishment of international standards, the creation of data trusts, and hands-on ethics labs this panel will share current work to mitigate bias and ensure fairness in AI.”

Panel Discussion: Sound and Cities: Designing for a Better Future

Friday 03/20, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm, at JW Marriott, Salon E, 110 E 2nd Street.
The panel consists, but is not limited to David van der Leer.

“Is our blaring modern soundscape harming our health? Cities are noisy places and while people are pretty good at tuning it out on a day-to-day basis, our sonic environments have serious, long-term impacts on our mental and physical health. But while cities have more noise laws than ever, over half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, experiencing way too much noise. Join experts on architecture & design, environmental research and music composition as we discuss how sound impacts everything from productivity and attention to physical well-being. Leave with ideas on how to design for a better sonic future in our urban communities.”
