Dutch Artist Raquel Maulwurf and Dutch Gallery LMAKprojects at PULSE NY 2015

For the 10^th anniversary edition of PULSE New York, Livingstone gallery presents a special duo presentation of Arnulf Rainer (Austria) and Raquel Maulwurf. The one thing that connects these remarkable artists lays in their physical approach to creating art. Where Rainer uses his own hands and fingers for his ‘overpaintings’, Maulwurf “smudges the charcoal with her bare hands, sometimes abrading her skin“*. She scratches the thick museum board with a box cutter, creating an almost three dimensional surface. (*Benno Tempel, Director Gemeentemuseum The Hague).

For this presentation Maulwurf made new works in her series Colliding galaxies, Black sea, Moving Nightscape and WW I. 

About Raquel Maulwurf

While Maulwurf’s previous work dealt with the remnants and destruction of war, her new work captures our world’s chaos when hit by the forces of nature and ecological disasters.
Making something evocative and beautiful from horrific events, these images, both destructive and monumental, are manipulated in such a way that only the essence of the event remains. The drawings no longer show what we see, but that which we know, making current events tangible, posing the question of why mankind is so eager to destroy.
Drawing on thicker museum board allows the artist to brutalize the surface with sharp objects; depicting violence through violence by scratching, the artist is materializing destruction in both subject and process.
Raquel Maulwurf (Madrid, 1975) has had a major solo exhibition at The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in The Netherlands. Her works have also been included in numerous international group museum exhibitions including Museo del Sannio Rocca dei Rettori, Italy, IKOB Museum for Contemporary Art, Belgium, Lahti Art Museum, Finland, Musée Château de Nyon, Switzerland, Museum De Hallen, Haarlem and the Gemeentemuseum The Hague in The Netherlands.
The artist’s works are included in prominent public collections including: Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Prefectural Art Museum Nagasaki, Teylers Museum Haarlem, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Museum van Bommel van Dam Venlo, Ministry of Foreign Affairs The Hague, Erasmus University Rotterdam Art Collection, De Nederlandsche Bank Art Collection, Caldic CollectionWassenaar and Progressive Art Collection, Cleveland, Ohio. Her work is included in many private collections both in the United States and Europe.
Several catalogs of her work will be available.

LMAKprojects

LMAKprojects will be presenting a solo booth (B21) by Russell Nachman, whose work is up for a PULSE prize and Jonathan Calm’s “Scudder Tower” will be shown as a project at the fair.

LMAKprojects was founded by Louky Keijsers Koning in 2005 and Bart Keijsers Koning joined as co-owner in 2009. The gallery’s primary interest lies in the commitment to the artist’s process and dedication to their thoughts and production. LMAKprojects works with artists who have proven to sustain continuity in their visual expression without being repetitive. The gallery strives to introduce collectors to new horizons through visual, sound, or conceptual experience, as well as opening communication to develop a relation between the viewer and the art. LMAKprojects is known for its exhibitions with international allure and focusing on interdisciplinary practices.
Louky Keijsers Koning graduated with a MA in Art History and a MA in Cultural Management from the University of Amsterdam in 2001. After a few years of managing various galleries she decided to expand her curatorial efforts and started LMAKprojects in 2005.
Bart Keijsers Koning graduated from SVA in 2000 specialized in painting, after a transfer from Columbia College Art department where he also studied Business. Prior to joining LMAKprojects in 2009 Keijsers Koning exhibited and curated in the Netherlands and the US, and managed various galleries.
