Dutch Design in Collective Design exhibition at Frieze New York (online)

From May 8-15, 2020 Collective Design will partner with Frieze New York to present the fair’s first exhibition dedicated to design, entitled “Color and Production: From the Atom to the Void”. The show will launch on Frieze Viewing Room, a new digital platform that offers visitors the opportunity to browse and collect works from featured galleries and curated sections in a virtual gallery space.

Curated by the London-based writer, historian and curator Libby Sellers, Color and Production will explore how technological developments have influenced the use of color within the fields of art and design, from pre-industrial times to today. It will trace the evolving materials and production methods that have enabled, and at times spurred, new aesthetic possibilities in color. The exhibition also looks to contemporary makers who are turning to alternative, natural sources in their practice.

“The drive to discover, exploit and transform materials into color has been central to artistic practice since pigment was first applied to cave walls. So many of the colors we experience today are, however, not by nature but from industry. The exhibition seeks to chart this flow in order to explore how color has been deployed, detached and liberated from such forces,” explains Libby.

Color and Production will feature furniture, textiles and objects alongside painting and sculpture, bridging the worlds of design and art through unexpected and compelling pairings. The selection will include significant historical objects, such as an Illuminated Manuscript from ca. 1500, in addition to works by some of the most important creators of the last century who are distinguished by their use of color, such as Josef Albers, Maarten Baas, Dan Flavin, Martino Gamper, Sheila Hicks, Hella Jongerius, Joseph Kosuth, Bertrand Lavier, John McCracken, Bruno Munari, Nathalie Du Pasquier and Gaetano Pesce, to name a few. Collective Design will also present pieces straight from the studios of Tanya Aguaniga, Studio Formafantasma, Jochen Holz, Cody Hoyt, Sabine Marcellis, and James Welling.

Contributing international design galleries include Friedman Benda, Galerie Kreo, Giustini Stagetti, Volume Gallery, Adrian Sassoon, Donzella, Hostler Burrows and Established & Sons. Artworks have been provided by Bortolami, Andrew Kreps, Massimo De Carlo, Sean Kelly Gallery and David Zwirner.

Collective Design’s online presentation will be organized into three discrete, thematic sections – Mapping, Matter and Material – that illuminate the ways in which color has served as prime material. The respected industrial designer Emiliano Godoy, who has worked for over 20 years in applied sustainability projects, is transforming the immersive environment he originally designed for Frieze New York into an online experience for the Frieze Viewing Room platform.

Frieze New York Director Loring Randolph, who initiated the partnership with Collective Design, stated, “Expanding on the conversations generated by the exceptional solo, dual, and curated group presentations from galleries in the main section of the fair, Frieze New York is constantly exploring new ways to engage with the most exciting issues of our time through institutional collaborations, curated exhibitions, public art projects, talks, and more. Art and design live side by side in many of our homes and hearts, and I am thrilled to bring design into the conversation this year at Frieze New York through our collaboration with Collective Design.”

Since its launch in 2013, Collective Design’s goal has been to progressively and critically evolve to reflect changes in the design community and the ways that collectors discover new works. This exhibition marks an exciting development of its program, offering a new presentation format for collectible design and art to one of the world’s most influential audiences.

Biographies

Libby Sellers is a design historian, curator and writer based in London. She was former curator of London’s Design Museum and supported emerging design through her eponymous gallery. Now Libby focuses on consultancy and curation for public institutions and private galleries. She lectures internationally, authored numerous essays, catalogues and publications on design and in 2014 she was honored by the British Women of the Year awards as a Woman of Achievement in the Arts.

Emiliano Godoy is a Mexican industrial designer with works in the permanent collections of MoMA and Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum. Working for over 20 years in applied sustainability projects, he ‘uses design as a tool for generating positive changes in society and the environment.” Emiliano’s studio produces interiors, architecture, exhibition and urban design projects for clients in Mexico, Europe and the United States.

Steven Learner is an architect, interior designer and creative director based in New York. Since 1996 his eponymous architecture and interior design firm has created widely published buildings and interiors including numerous residences, art galleries, and a noted personal contemporary art museum.
In 2013 Learner founded Collective Design, creating the first modern vintage and collectible design show in New York.
