During Miami Art Week 2021, the Raw Project invited multiple Netherlands-based mural artists to Miami, to produce murals at the Edison Senior High School. Among the invited artists were Hyland Mather, Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman, and Willehad ‘Wayne Horse’ Eilers. The project was organized in collaboration with the Amsterdam-based STRAAT Museum. The murals will be up indefinitely.
Hyland Mather grew up in Alaskabut has lived in The Netherlands for over twenty years. He’s created artworks under the vision titled “The Lost Object” -creating art from found or lost items. These artworks range in scale from intimate free-standingsculptures to extremely large mural artworks and installations. He also paints geometric shape piles on large walls, canvas and paper –verygraphic and flat paintings using simple geometric forms to create a balanced composition. He has also been to owner and curator of Andenken Gallery and Design for the past 20 years, and is one of the founders of Stichting Straat. As a gallerist,Mather has held exhibitionsinside Straat Museum, and has led many large and successful art projects, together with the Dutch Consulate, during Art Basel Miami week.
Willehad Eilers, also works under the pseudonym Wayne Horse. Eilers graduated from the Rijks Akademie in Amsterdam. He continues to live and work in the Dutch capital today. His eclectic body of work comprises painting, drawing, video and installation, and is distinctive for its lyrical quality, playful humor and expressiveness. A recurring narrative in his oeuvre revolves around the bizarre, occasionally ugly but always compelling aspects of humanity.
Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman is an internationally known artist, born, raised and based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He began tagging ʻShoeʼ in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. In the 1990s he furthered his technique, ran his own design company and was partner in advertising agency Unruly, which he later turned into brand for silk scarves and a gallery. Niels Shoe Meulman revolutionized the art of writing in 2007 with Calligraffiti, an art form that fuses calligraphy and graffiti. Since then, his calligraphic paintings (signed NSM) have been shown in countless international exhibitions and are part of several museum collections. His recent painting style can be described as Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin. It plays an important role in the new art movement Abstract Vandalism.
Miami Edison High School is a secondary school located at 6161 NW 5 Ct. in the Little Haiti neighborhood of Miami, Florida, United States. It is part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. Its provost is Leon Maycock. Miami Edison is an inner-city school. As of 2011, it is known for historically having the largest Haitian-American student population of any Miami-Dade public school.
The RAW Project’s mission is to bring together a coalition of non-profits, organizations, corporate partners, businesses, city agencies, artists, and communities to create better learning environments through art. The common goal is to bring color and inspiration to the walls of the school, and launch a long term goal to support the creation of an arts and better learning through experience.
STRAAT resides in an 8000m2 former warehouse on the NDSM wharf, both a national monument and the biggest indoor playground for graffiti and street art in Amsterdam. It offers a total museum experience, as well as educational opportunities and guided tours. Its current exhibition displays more than 150 artworks by 130+artists. The artworks were created on-site and most of these mind blowing visual experiences are as big as outdoor walls. As a museum, we provide the added value of context and information.
