Dutch producer Sofia Sondervan’s short film The Letter Room nominated for the 2021 Oscars

The nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards were announced on March 15, 2021 and one of the contenders is a short film produced by Sofia Sondervan of Dutch Tilt Film!

Making the list of nominees for the Best Live-Action Short Film category is The Letter Room, a dark comedy written and directed by Elvira Lind (Bobbi Jene, Songs for Alexis) and produced by by Dutch Tilt Film’s Sofia Sondervan-Bild (“Cadillac Records”), executive produced by Inspire Entertainment’s Jason Spire, Lind, Isaac and Topic’s Ryan Chanatry and Gena Konstantinakos.

The film follows the secret life of Richard (Oscar Isaac), a corrections officer that’s transferred to a job in the letter room. Richard is a kind yet curious man who lives a relatively simple existence, until a new world suddenly opens up to him as he finds himself increasingly involved in a prisoner’s deeply private affairs. The Letter Room also stars Alia Shawkat, John Douglas Thompson, Eileen Galindo, and Brian Petsos.

“The Letter Room” screened at Telluride, Palm Springs International, ShortFest, Hollyshorts Film Festival and had its world premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. The short film landed on First Look Media’s streaming service Topic last week, and is now available for a worldwide audience on Vimeo. Watch the trailer here:

About Sofia Sondervan

Sofia Sondervan is a NY based Award winning film producer. She is currently in pre-production on King Richard written and to be directed by Darnell Martin (Cadillac Records) based on the book The Life and Times of Little Richard and The Art of Longevity to be directed by Ian Barnes. She most recently produced The Man Who Knew Infinity starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons, London Town starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Dougray Scott, Natascha McElhone and Daniel Huttlestone, featuring music by The Clash and the film Urge starring Pierce Brosnan. Her company Dutch Tilt Film develops and produces film and television. She is currently casting Walking on Thorns by Hayley Easton Street (Ex Machina, Star Wars) and to be directed by Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity). She is also developing the bestseller Girl In The Dark by Marion Pauw into a limited series.

Other productions include Bringing Up Bobby directed by Famke Janssen (X-Men) and starring Milla Jovovich. Previously she headed up Sony Music Film, a division of Sony Music, which she founded in 2005. While at Sony Music, she produced Cadillac Records, released by Sony Pictures and starring Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright and Beyonce Knowles which was nominated for a Golden Globe, eight NAACP Image Awards, and won Best Picture at the Black Reel Awards. She won the Black Reel Award for the film. Sofia also produced TriStar’s Feel The Noise with Jennifer Lopez and the award-winning Ghosts of Cite Soleil executive produced by Wyclef Jean and winner of the DGA Award for Best Director. She acquired the critically acclaimed “The Future is Unwritten” about Joe Strummer and The Clash and “East of Havana” produced by Charlize Theron.

Sofia’s industry experience also includes Head of East Coast Production for ContentFilm where she produced The King, which starred Gael Garcia Bernal and William Hurt and premiered in the official selection (Un Certain Regard) of the Cannes Film Festival. She also produced Party Monster starring Macaulay Culkin, Rick starring Bill Pullman and Hebrew Hammer starring Adam Goldberg, and worked on such films as The Cooler and Thank You for Smoking.

Earlier in her career, Sofia served as Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Productions for POP.com, a joint venture between Dreamworks SKG and Imagine Entertainment, and Head of Acquisitions for Cary Woods’ Independent Pictures, a subsidiary of New Line, as well as Director of Business Affairs for Miramax Films.
