DutchCultureUSA is proud to present a new video about Dutch architects and architecture in the United States. Filmed by video journalist Daan Wallis, the video features a number of Dutch firms and their work in the U.S., as well as a number of American specialists who have worked with them to create signature projects in NYC and elsewhere. Watch the video via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N52ERuXnVc.
The Netherlands has had a big influence on contemporary architecture. With firms like OMA leading the charge, Dutch architecture has become a worldwide industry, with projects built in Europe, the Middle East and China. In the last few years, they have also left a growing mark in the United States.
Following a number of signature buildings by Rem Koolhaas in the U.S., many Dutch firms have followed in his footsteps, including Archi-Tectonics, Concrete, Mecanoo, !melk, MVRDV, Piet Boon, One Architecture, Piet Oudolf, SO-IL, UN Studio, and West 8. Some of them with offices in New York City.
They have produced signature project throughout the country, including libraries, museums, apartment buildings, multi-use complexes, hotels, private residences, masterplans for parks, and more.
DutchCultureUSA spoke with New York-based architects Jerry van Eyck, founder of !melk, Winka Dubbeldam, founder of Archi-Tectonics, and Florian Idenburg, co-founder of SO-IL (Solid Objectives, Idenburg Liu) about their experiences in the U.S. We also spoke with Warrie Price, President of The Battery Conservancy (horticulture masterplan of The Battery by Piet Oudolf), Susanna Sirefman, President of Dovetail Design Strategists (led architect search for Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library), and Anthony W. Marx, President & CEO of the New York Public Library (renovation of Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library by Francine Houben of Mecanoo).
