Exhibition “Top 100 (Remixed)” by Berry van Boekel

Exhibition “Top 100 (Remixed)” by Berry van Boekel at Tempus Projects on view August 4 – September 21, 2017

Fri, Aug 4 - Thu, Sep 21  2017

The non-profit art organization Tempus Projects is proud to present Top 100 (Remixed) by Berry van Boekel, curated by Jade Dellinger.

For more than twenty-five years now, artist Lambertus “Berry” van Boekel has been marking time and keeping the beat with his annual (admittedly obsessive) Top 100 painting project. Representing subjects as wide-ranging as his impressively deep and eclectic musical tastes, the Dutch-born, Fort Myers, Florida-based painter notes: “The Top 100 started as a hobby in the 1980’s; an adoring fan paying tribute by making portraits of his musical heroes.” Creating Top 10 song lists every three to four days since February of 1983 and compiling them into his Top 100 playlist at year’s-end, van Boekel began selectively illustrating his lists by 1986 and rigorously formalized the process five years later – making a drawing or painting inspired by each of those one hundred songs. In 1993, the artist moved from the Netherlands to the United States to complete his MFA at The Ohio State University. Van Boekel has since exhibited at Skylab in Columbus; Reed Gallery at the University of Cincinnati; Peel Gallery in Houston; Galerie De Bank in the Netherlands; at the NADA Art Fair in Miami; with Country Club Projects in Cincinnati; and on multiple occasions with White Columns in New York. Van Boekel also currently serves as an adjunct professor at Florida Southwestern State College.

Jade Dellinger is an independent curator and director of the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Florida Southwestern State College. Dellinger has collaborated with the Graphic Studio, USF CAM, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Dellinger has curated major solo museum shows for Allan McCollum, Lucy Orta, Atelier Van Lieshout, Carlos Amorales, Janaina Tschäpe, Felice Varini, Keith Haring, The Art Guys, John Cage and others. He has contributed to numerous exhibition catalogues and publications including Sculpture, Flash Art International, Art Papers, Guitar Aficionado and Permanent Food, and co-authored the book, Are We Not Men? We Are DEVO! (SAF Publishing Ltd./UK, 2003/2008), which traces the history of the seminal 1980’s New Wave band.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by The Gobioff Foundation, The Arts Council of Hillsborough County, Stanton Storer Embrace the Arts Foundation, The Knoxville Foundation, and the Mermaid Tavern.
