Still from Shabu, directed by Shamira Raphaëla, courtesy of Tangerine Tree
This year’s Socially Relevant Film Festival in New York opens with the Dutch film Shabu, directed by Shamira Raphaëla. There will be a post screening Q&A with the filmmaker and Shabu himself.
Fourteen-year-old Shabu is a good-natured, creative, and street-smart boy from the south of Rotterdam. When he wrecks his grandmother’s car on a joyride, his whole family is angry with him. He has a summer to make amends before his grandmother returns from a vacation in Suriname. He then spends a summer trying to make money for the car while pursuing his passion: making music.
After the Q&A, a reception follows for VIP ticket holders and invited guests.
