KLM debuts pop up shop in downtown Manhattan

25 June 2015 — 27 June 2015

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines invites New Yorkers to explore the excitement of a KLM onboard experience while engaging with the best of Dutch lifestyle at its first-ever Pop Up Shop in downtown Manhattan. From Thursday, June 25 through Saturday, June 27, the public is invited to visit Open House Gallery located at 201 Mulberry Street to be transported to a world of interactive airline fun complete with activations and giveaways. The Pop Up Shop opens at 11:00 a.m., and is capped off with a Heineken happy hour and live DJ set at 5:00 p.m. each day.

Visitors can enjoy treats mirroring KLM’s onboard offerings, take home KLM goodies, and win tickets to Amsterdam through raffles and activities including a cycle for (Flying Blue) miles contest and an interactive photo booth.  A daily “waffle happy hour” from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. features free Dutch coffee and stroopwafels. An interactive experience is planned each day: Dutch artist Merijn Hos will make screen prints and create an art installation on-site; Eat Dutch Waffles will lead a stroopwafel cooking demo; a DJ music booth will create a lively club scene, and a KLM Kiddie Korner will feature paper airplane tutorials, balloon modeling and face painting.

“The KLM Pop Up Shop will allow guests to experience the inspiration of a KLM journey without ever having to leave Manhattan,” said Marnix Fruitema, Senior Vice President, Air France-KLM North America. “At this event, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will showcase its place of origin: Holland (“The Original Cool”), share the fun, caring values of the brand, and celebrate the many innovative aspects of Dutch culture through interactive experiences.”

Attendees can listen to records from Dutch DJs and artists in a private listening booth. Every day at 5:00 p.m., the Pop Up Shop will become a music scene showcasing iconic beats by Dutch DJs Regino and Aleppo at the Heineken Happy Hour. The event will culminate in a giveaway on Saturday night featuring a trip to Sensation, the World’s Leading Dance Event, on July 4th.

In addition to showing off the new KLM World Business Class seatbed, the KLM lounge area will be adorned with a hanging art installation custom-made by local designers, as well as design and decor created by Dutch designer Hella Jongerius.

About KLM

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded in 1919, making it the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name. In 2004, Air France and KLM merged to form AIR FRANCE KLM. The merger produced the strongest European airline group based on two powerful brands and hubs – Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Paris Charles de Gaulle. Retaining its own identity, the group focuses on three core businesses: passenger transport, cargo and aircraft maintenance.

In the Netherlands, KLM comprises the core of the KLM Group, which further includes KLM Cityhopper, transavia.com and Martinair. KLM serves all its destinations using a modern fleet and employs over 32,000 people around the world. KLM is a leader in the airline industry, offering reliable operations and customer-oriented products resulting from its policy of enthusiasm and sustainable innovation.

Air France-KLM and its partners Delta Air Lines and Alitalia operate the biggest trans-Atlantic joint-venture with over 250 daily flights.

KLM is a member of the global SkyTeam airline alliance, offering customers an extensive worldwide network. The KLM network connects the Netherlands to every important economic region in the world and, as such, serves as a powerful driver for the economy.
