A/W 2017-18 RUNWAY REVIEW

On March 21, 2017, from 4:00PM – 5:30PM Li Edelkoort will give a runway review on Autumn and Winter 2017-18 at The Townhouse in New York.

Join Li Edelkoort to get her personal take on the latest A/W 2018-19 collections, colors, textiles and beauty looks, dissecting the evolution of trends from forecast to fashion show. Li will discuss how a garment can be so spectacular that it speaks for itself. Clothes destined to help us express ourselves, defined by the weight of a fabric, the tactility of a yarn, the nobility of a fibre. A labour of love that has seen a generation of post-pragmatic designers produce “clothes that work as hard as we do”, as the formidable Suzy Menkes calls them. This intimate session includes discussions with the audience.

A/W 2018-19 BEAUTY & COLORS PORTRAITS OF BEAUTY

On March 22, 2017, from 9.30AM – 10:45AM Li Edelkoort will hold a seminar on the Autumn and Winter 2018-19 beauty at The Townhouse in New York.

Portraits are what society is all about and the vertical portrait format of upright handheld smartphones (and videos) is telling of a world where the focus is on facial expressions; narrowing all other dimensions. Faces are made, lips are pouted, eyes encircled and enlarged, hair massively afloat, colors wild and screaming. The cosmetic industry is thriving because of these unknown new media partners and is accelerating the pace of new products, new concepts, new faces, and new vision. All aspects are to be changed, all matter is scrutinised, all efforts point towards popular progress. The emphasis is on the constantly new. Therefore a host of new approaches are accumulated in this forecast, to be used to generate traffic and design innovation.

A/W 2018-19 ACTIVEWEAR PORTRAITS OF PARTICLES

On March 22, 2017, from 11:15AM-12:30PM Li Edelkoort will hold a seminar on the Autumn and Winter 2018-19 portraits of particles at the Townhouse in New York.

Infinitely small, yet infinitely powerful, the biological world is governed by the smallest particles on earth. A world of wonder where spores and semen, pistils and membranes, fungus and polyps, algae and mosses, bacteria and atoms reign supreme, commanding the survival of species, including ourselves. A complex universe of small particles working in union to get things done, just as new sports propose small movements to get us in shape, moving away from the radical over-cultivation of the body to a finer and leaner form of aesthetic. A gradual building up of our defences and stamina, with particles acting the part with fluttering furs, sticky surfaces, slick coatings and irregular surfaces. This scattered world of porous power with withering heights and weltering downs, are all universes in their own right, delivering their innate beauty to us to be mimicked and intimately understood.

A/W 2018-19 “PORTRAITS” WITH LI EDELKOORT (NEW YORK)

On May 16, 2017, from 9:00AM-12:30PM Li Edelkoort will hold a seminar on portraits at the Tishman Auditorium in New York.

A good portrait opens the soul of the sitter to the world and professes faith in the power of picturing an unknown truth, a portrait is thus an artistic representation of a human, driven by the ideal to represent the personality and even catch the mood of the person, or cat or coat for that matter. This focus on the face and shoulders will create a stir in fashion where the portrait collar will take on new social media value, showing the essence of dress within one detail. The portrait often shows a person looking directly at the artist and the audience in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer, and therefore a good portrait is not measured in likeness but in liveliness, in how to portray the energy that a person possesses, how to depict serenity, melancholy or spleen, how to sculpt strength and energy, how to paint pain. Hidden moods and thought processes are laid bare by the simple gesture of a piece of charcoal, undiscovered qualities unveiled with the movement of a pen, inner strength revealed by the stroke of a brush. Tears are rendered in watercolours, skin is highlighted with sanguine crayons, features are finely and precisely etched for historical purposes. The shutter of a camera will hold a stare into eternity, making icons of our contemporaries. With the push of a button people freeze themselves with others in selfies, creating their own singular legends, to be communicated instantly. But portraits can also be written and recited, hidden in a song, chosen by a poem, revealed in a story. Narrated as a portrait of a lady, a portrait of a marriage or a portrait of the artist as a young man.

A/W 2018-19 “PORTRAITS” WITH LI EDELKOORT (LOS ANGELES)

On July 11, 2017, from 9:30AM – 1:00PM Li Edelkoort will hold a seminar on portraits at the LA MOCA in Los Angeles.
