From June 1st until 30th, the Amsterdam-based visual artist Marjolijn de Wit will present her solo exhibition “Three Stones Make a Wall” in Gallery Two at the Torrance Art Museum (TAM), CA. The closing reception will be held on June 30th from 6 pm until 9 pm.
“Three Stones Make a Wall”
The solo exhibition of work by Marjolijn de Wit “Three Stones Make a Wall” features ceramic photographic collage, installation, and painting which explore ideas of future archaeology, the interpretation of history, and our relationship with nature and the built environment.
Her installations use unclassified ceramic pieces resembling artifacts, while her collages utilize found images in combination with raw, glazed, or photo-printed ceramics, and act as inspiration for her paintings. Large in scale, her naturalistic paintings of the small ceramic collages cause the viewer to question what is real, what is photo printed on ceramic, or a painting of a photo, and what is ceramic, or a painting of ceramic.
About the Artist
Marjolijn de Wit was born in the Netherlands, and lives and works in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost (Breda) and was a resident at the Rijksakademie (Amsterdam) and Sundaymorning@EKWC. Her museum exhibitions include CODA Museum Apeldoorn, the De Pont Museum, the Gemeentemuseum, and the Museum Van Bommel Van Dam. She has exhibited widely in Europe in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium. Recent solo exhibitions include Galerie Houg (Paris), Otto Zoo Gallery (Milan), and Spinnerei (Leipzig). She earned the 2013 PULSE Prize, a jury-awarded grant, and has been the recipient of the Mondriaan Fund, and the Amsterdam Fonds Voor de Kunst developing stipend.
