Micky Hoogendijk exhibition ‘Living in the Layers’ at Davis Gallery, Austin

Romance, surrealism and intentional discomfort combine in the exhibition ‘Living in the Layers’ from photographer and collage artist Peggy Weiss and Dutch photographer Micky Hoogendijk. The exhibition will be on view at the Davis Gallery from February 22 until April 5, 2014.

In ‘Living in the Layers’, inspired by dreams, memories, and the vulnerability of man, Weiss and Hoogendijk take us on a journey into a surreal realm that is at once romantic and a bit unsettling. Weiss and Hoogendijk’s work leads the viewer through the layers, into the dream, and towards a renewed awareness of the ever-evolving layers in our own lives. Weiss’ collages will come to life in a new video and installation piece that will allow viewers to step into the collage and walk through the dream. Hoogendijk draws inspiration from the Dutch masters, creating portraits and images that are complex in their simplicity.

About Micky Hoogendijk

Micky Hoogendijk, born in 1970 in Amsterdam, is a recent addition to the Austin arts scene. She has lived here since 2011, previously living and working in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Netherlands where she was born. She has shown her work in Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Istanbul. Her work was selected for the cover image of New Dutch Photography Talent, 2013, and has been published in the Washington Post. She has built an internationally successful career as a model and actress, winning awards for her work including “Best Actress in a Feature Film” at the New York Independent Film & Video Festival for her role in Blindspot. This experience in front of the camera had been an essential step on the road to her evolution into a photographer whose work blends visual arts, theatre and technology.

Hoogendijk’s work is characterized by sharp iconic images that deeply touch your soul. With her camera she enchants with lighting, and her images often contain religious and mythical themes as well as daily scenes. At the core of her work lies a quest for the majesty of vulnerability, an image without embellishment that captures the powerful essence of naked emotion.
