The Museum Association of New York presents its virtual programming for the fall, including a discussion with author Russell Shorto on Dutch Heritage Tourism in the Hudson Valley and several virtual tours of Dutch colonial houses in the Albany region.
Due to COVID-19 the “The Power of Partnership” Conference in Albany, NY from March 29-31 had to be cancelled, but many program elements have been brought online. Advance registration required.and all programs are free unless otherwise indicated.
- Discussion Creating a Dutch Colonial Heritage Hudson Valley Tourism Experience with Russell Shorto – 1 PM, Tuesday, November 10 (LIMITED SPACE)
Russell Shorto’s June 2019 NY Times article “In the Hudson Valley: A Drive Back in Time” renewed public tourism interest in Dutch colonial history.New York’s Dutch roots give the state’s history a unique grounding, and they offer historic sites an opportunity with great potential for tourism and economic development. Mr. Shorto and tourism industry partners will join MANY in brainstorming ideas on how historic sites can create new tourism experiences centered around Dutch Colonial history.

This tour will provide a glimpse into their life in Albany and will include an exploration of documents and objects related to the period.

Historic Albany FoundationThis tour of the oldest building in Albany, the Van Ostrande-Radliff House, built in 1728 will explore a unique piece of early American Colonial history. The Van Ostrande-Radliff House is the most tangible link to Albany’s Dutch past. Historic Albany Foundation is returning the structure to its original appearance and conserving later additions. - Virtual Tour and Discussion Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site: Exploring Multiple Perspectives – Monday, November 16

Schuyler Mansion and Fort Crailo State Historic SitesThis tour of Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site will highlight unique approaches to help bring more voices to the history we share. We will begin at the 1917 Visitor Center, where the installation tells the story of six individuals who lived at, worked at, or visited the Schuyler’s home in the 18th century. In the mansion, Heidi Hill will illuminate practices and programs that have helped pioneer a multiple perspectives narrative and discuss a new tour: Say Their Names: Rediscovering the Enslaved Men, Women and Children of Schuyler Mansion.
