Several works of leading painters from the Netherlands will be displayed at the exhibition ‘Extravagant Bodies: Northern Mannerist Prints from the Kainen Collection’, National Gallery of Art in Washington until January 5, 2014.

A spectacular selection of northern mannerist prints from the Kainen Collection will be showcased. The exhibition includes every major artist of this extraordinary style and features many of their masterpieces, including Hendrick Goltzius’ early Mars and Venus, Jacob Matham’s monumental Table of Cebes, and Jan Muller’s heroic plates of Bellona and the Apotheosis of the Arts. This exhibition, the first of three to focus on central aspects of her bequest, presents some 50 works that embody the sophisticated imagery, extraordinary stylization, and virtuoso technique of the printmaking industry that flourished in the northern Netherlands and at the imperial court of Prague in the late 16th century. The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art.
