Paulien Lethen Opens Holland Tunnel Art Newburgh

On May 25th and May 26th, Dutch artist Paulien Lethen is opening Holland Tunnel Art Newburgh, New York, in a renovated 1860 warehouse. The art space, in the street level floor of 46 Chambers St between Liberty and Grand St, will feature for the opening an exhibition by local and international artists and live jazz by Dutch pianist/vocalist Heleen Schuttevaer, Lethens sister, and other musicians.

Holland Tunnel

The space is the next location for the Holland Tunnel Gallery, that originated in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY, in 1997 in a Home Depot Garden shed. In Lethens backyard. It got immediately written up in The New York Times and became an icon for the neighborhood. In 2000, the Dutch sisters Paulien and Heleen opened Holland Tunnel Gallery Paros in Greece, with summer exhibitions and concerts in a 400 year old merchant house. Lethen lived for many years on Paros, an island in the Aegean Sea, and now spends summers.

It seemed logical that when Lethen moved to Newburgh, the Holland Tunnel Gallery would follow. With Holland Tunnel Art Newburgh she creates a new place for exhibitions, performances, concerts and movie screenings. The other spaces in the building are artist studios. In Newburgh, Paulien Lethen feels the same exciting artistic energy of Williamsburg in the 1990s – then known as The New Bohemia. She is happy to offer a new cultural venue and art center in the Historic District of Newburgh where art and people can get together.
