“The emancipation of the south will impact creativity in all domains everywhere!”
– Li Edelkoort
Meet Li Edelkoort online as she unveils her new book, Proud South, for the first time ever! She will be joined by the Indian designer and textile activist, Kavita Parmar, to discuss southern identity and artisanal fabric production.
“Southern textiles include gathered techniques that are designing tactility and fantasy, such as fringes, frills and pompoms to rattle while dancing. Standing out from the surface, these elaborate embellishments give dimension to festive garments that dabble in applications. Quilting uses leftover materials, recycling the waste of the west into elaborate austral beauty. Haberdashery has the knack to lift a vintage dress out of oblivion, embroideries retrace history and ancestry, and patchworks tell stories of magical days gone by when stitching becomes magic while telling stories. Crochet turns knits into gardens, tassels turn volume into coats, rags make outfits shudder with movement and laughter. Creative communities unite to deal with the problems of over-production, designing one-off pieces to gain creative traction, without burdening the planet with more of the same old stuff. Making the south a center of textile creativity and reincarnation. ”
