DM Contemporary Art Gallery - New York Consulate Region

DM Contemporary NYC is pleased to present Tilts & Pinwheels, an exhibition of paintings by Rob de Oude, which opens on Friday, March 11 and continues through April 23.

In his first solo exhibition with the gallery, Rob de Oude – an artist known for ‘making straight lines bend’ – will be exhibiting a series of recent paintings that are at once delightful yet minimal, meditative yet surprisingly dynamic. De Oude’s paintings are fastidiously composed of the most basic visual element: the line. In fact, the artist has devised handmade rigs that allow him to precisely measure and systematically paint row upon row of lines. Meticulously placed, repeated, and densely layered, the lines form bands and infinite grid possibilities. The title of the exhibition refers to the process and the physical aspect of tilting and rotating the painting each time a layer is added. By shifting angles and adding layers of color, geometric shapes and rhythmic patterns are revealed. The overlapping grids of color, the collision of angled lines, and the crisscrossing patterns produce changing optical effects, including moiré patterns, where the grids begin to warp and bow and the lines appear deceptively bent. The square gridded fields, seductive in their appeal and simplicity, become charged and dynamic – the shifting optics unleash an underlying energy.
