Amsterdam’s historic Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performed back-to-back concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Featuring Chief Conductor Designate Klaus Mäkelä, one of the music world’s most exciting stars.
As part of our FUTURE400 program, we hosted one of the performances in New York City with our Dutch and US network, together with Carnegie Hall and the Orchestra, marking the strong ties between the Netherlands and New York City.
They presented an exciting lineup, including Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto, featuring soloist Lisa Batiashvili, and the newly commissioned work Body Cosmic by the orchestra’s composer in residence Ellen Reid. As a women composer in the classical music world, she represents the new voices and perspectives that FUTURE400 highlights.
The program also showcased Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture, and Transfigured Night by Arnold Schoenberg, marking his 150th anniversary.
Consul General Ahmed Dadou: “Thank you to Carnegie Hall for your partnership, and for your continued commitment to bringing world-class music to a broad public. For 50 years, culture has been an integral part of the Dutch foreign policy, and Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest is essential in this regard. As we honor 400 years of Dutch-New York history, this concert moves us to our future, with beauty and joy.”
“The audience left the concert hall a bit stunned, a bit changed, a bit remade.” – Financial Times
“Mäkelä, who in his young career has already shown a consistent commitment tocontemporary music, deserves credit for bringing an American premiere to Carnegie, when it’s hardly the norm for the great European orchestras to tour with pieces by livingcomposers.” – The New York Times
