On June 12th at 8 pm, Dutch visual artist Sebastiaan Bremer will host “Sanctuary East” at Nublu (151 Avenue C), New York, NY, featuring DJ P.U.D.G.E, Bridget Barkan, Elsz, and Melanie Charles, among others. “Sanctuary” is a multi-media arts festival celebrating community, spirituality and creative expression.
“Sanctuary” seeks to break down barriers as we explore the notions of “art,” “spirituality” and “community” in a quickly gentrifying neighbourhood. It’s an opportunity for newcomers and long-time residents to come together in celebration, and create a safe place for self-expression, experimentation, and artistic collaboration. Hosted by visual artist Sebastiaan Bremer, “Sanctuary” began in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and will soon grow and cross international borders.
Amsterdam-born Sebastiaan Bremer (1970—) moved to New York in 1992. Largely self-taught, Bremer attended the Vrije Academie in The Hague from 1989 until 1991 and studied at Skowhegan (1998), as well as Art Omi (2001). In 2001 he had his solo debut, ”Veronica,” at Roebling Hall, New York. Bremer’s work is part of several important collections in the US and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA. Furthermore, Sebastiaan Bremer’s artwork has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, NY, and The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT. He has had solo exhibitions at, among others, Air de Paris and James Fuentes in New York.
