Several Dutch exhibitors at the 10th annual NY Art Book Fair, presented by Printed Matter

Printed Matter, Inc, presents the tenth annual NY Art Book Fair, from September 18 to 20, 2015, at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens. The Fair includes thirteen Dutch exhibitors: 4478ZINE, Elisabeth Tonnard, Foam Magazine, Fw: Books, Girls Like Us, Hundöra Press, Idea Books, Knust / Extrapool, Onomatopee, Roma Publications, Valiz, Werkplaats Typografie, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art.  A preview of the NY Art Book Fair will be held on the evening of Thursday, September 17. Free and open to the public, the NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines. This year, the fair features over 370 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions and independent publishers from twenty-eight countries. Last year’s fair was attended by more than 35,000 people.

4478 ZINE

4478zine publishes and promotes all printed matter by Erik van der Weijde. Publications range from zines to books and also include collaborations with other artists and publishers.

Elisabeth Tonnard

Elisabeth Tonnard publishes artist’s books in which texts and images extracted from the cultural archive are processed and laid out to exhibit their latent messages. The works range in scale and method from a book that is completely invisible, to a book containing a short story that swallowed a novel, to a book that is a portable swimming pool.

FOAM Magazin

Foam Magazine is an international photography magazine published three times a year around a specific theme. Each 288-page issue contains multiple portfolios printed on carefully considered different kinds of paper, high-grade graphic design, interviews and opinions by experts in the field of photography and surprising, idiosyncratic editorial choices.

Fw:Books

Fw:Books is an independent organization and fluid, growing network between photographers, writers and curators. Founded in 2008 by Hans Gremmen, Fw: has its focus on photography. Photography in itself has no fixed medium, we see the choice to make a books, as a choice to make a new work.

Girls Like Us

GIRLS LIKE US is a bi-annual independent journal turning the spotlight on international expanding community of women from all breeds and gender within arts, culture and activism. Through personal stories, essays and vanguard visuals GIRLS LIKE US unfolds feminist legacies in a playful radical way. Mixing politics with pleasure, the magazine is mapping new routes towards a post-gender future.

Hundöra Press

Hundöra Press is a small publisher based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We make things with our friends (and our dear TR1510) and we send them around the world.

IDEA Books

Founded in 1976, Idea Books is a specialist wholesaler and distributor of books, exhibition catalogues, and DVDs on contemporary architecture, art, photography, design, fashion, and film. Our scope is international. We act as agents for publishers and institutions from many countries, and offer their books throughout the world.

Knust / Extrapool

Established by artists for artists in the 1980s, Knust is Extrapool’s famous, infamous graphic workshop specializing in stencil (“mimeograph”) print. Located in Nijmegen, Netherlands, Knust is an essential part of the multi-omniverse of the Extrapool art space, creating an accessible printing and bookmaking workshop where many niches meet, greet, clash & mix.

Onomatopee

Onomatopee is a presentation-space based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Their projects, consisting of exhibitions and publications, infect the guts of intellect and the intellect of our guts; Onomatopee mediates between experts in work and devotes to expertise of life. In this, they bring together various backgrounds and disciplines.

Roma Publications

Independent art publisher, founded in 1998 by artist Mark Manders and graphic designer Roger Willems used as a platform to produce publications in close collaboration with a growing number of artists, institutions, writers and designers.

Valiz

Valiz is an independent international publisher on contemporary art, theory, critique, design, typography and urban affairs. Our books offer critical reflection, interdisciplinary inspiration, and establish a connection between cultural disciplines and socio-economic questions. We publish these books out of our commitment to their content, to social issues and to the artists, designers and authors. Our programme consists of two components: – Theory and texts on art and culture – Books that are conceived and elaborated in close collaboration with artists, designers and art institutes Apart from publishing Valiz organizes cultural projects in which certain topics in contemporary art are investigated.

Werkplaats Typografie

This year the Werkplaats Typografie’s contribution to the New York Art Book Fair begins with the display of an object that is an integral part of the offset printing process. This object is rarely seen by the public (and even the designer) because it doesn’t need to be. It is an in-between object that hosts an uncompleted image – usually a recording from a digital file – towards its final destination as printed matter. This object is a Computer To Plate [CTP] printing plate. Each student of the Werkplaats Typografie will display a CTP plate produced by Drukkerij Raddraaier, a printing shop set up during the Amsterdam squatters movement in the late 70s. During the fair the students will explore and make use of the surroundings and resources of New York City to ‘print’ or ‘realise’ the content of their plate.

Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art

As with our approach to exhibition making, Witte de With sustains a curatorial position devoted to the production of publications. These become archives of the activity of writers, artists, curators, and designers alike. Witte de With’s publications range from catalogues to artists’ books, editions, readers, and the online platform WdW Revie.
