Studio Job Partners with Barneys New York for the 2016 Holiday Season
Studio Job is collaborating with Barneys New York to design an installation for the holiday window display at their Madison Avenue flagship in addition to offering a curated selection of collectable items from Studio Job Gallery, which will be on view and available for sale at the Madison Avenue store. Barneys has also commissioned Studio Job to create the holiday graphics that will be used across all 14 of the retailer’s U.S. flagships and smaller regional stores. The installation in the third Madison Avenue-facing window will be on display through January 2 and will embody the annual theme of ‘Love Peace Joy’.
Focusing mostly on ‘Love’, Studio Job took inspiration from iconic 1970s television show ‘the Love Boat’. The extravagant seven-foot boat is a tour de force of dozens of meticulously crafted parts. The sculpture features projected silhouettes of people kissing in the boat, alternating between two men, a man and a woman, and two women. Drawing from Dadaism and Surrealism, the display features kinetic claws pinching, arms rowing, keys turning, and gears all moving in unison. Additionally, viewers will find a rabbit, a neon rainbow, lips, fish, and more throughout the rest of the boat, all hand-painted in a joyful array of colors. It might be described as ‘a truly absurd, surreal, Dada-esque cruise ship, presented in all the theatrical splendor of Barneys’ flagship windows, literally packed with too many ideas to explain and too many (mixed) messages to understand.’
In addition to the window installation, Barneys has selected limited-edition works from the Studio Job Gallery collection to display in their store. These hand-casted, hand-polished bronze collector’s items include: ‘Nose’, ‘Diamond’, ‘Stamp Mirror’, ‘Spoon Door Knocker’, and a model of the ‘Steve McQueen Porsche 911S’. These objects will be on view and for sale through January 2. They are also available online here.
Studio Job also designed ‘Love Peace Joy’-themed signature graphics that will be used across all Barneys stores across the country during the Holiday Season. Drawing from the motifs of the overall campaign, Studio Job created a pattern comprised of peace signs, smiling lips, rainbows, doves, roses, and sunshine in a myriad of bright colors.
The ‘Love Peace Joy’ collaboration also results in series of exclusive products for Barneys, which will echo the same eccentric elements at ‘the Love Boat’. Bags, coasters, cookies, ornaments, lollipops, nail art, clothing patches, pins, playing cards, placemats, puzzles, and contemporary tattoos will all be available for purchase at Barneys.
