Tom de Witte
The Wave Hill Spring Gala will take place on May 30. More info
On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Wave Hill presents a conversation with international landscape designer Tom de Witte.
Join award-winning international landscape designer Tom de Witte for a rare public talk in the United States. Tom’s projects span the globe–from his home in the Netherlands to Tokyo–and range from intimate private gardens to notable public spaces. His work is deeply influenced by his lifelong love of plants and long-term collaboration with Piet Oudolf, renowned landscape designer, author and leading figure of the New Perennial movement.
Tom will spotlight three projects–including his own home garden–to shed light on his design principles, his collaboration with Piet and lessons learned when moving designs from paper to earth. After the lecture, mix and mingle with Tom and fellow garden enthusiasts at a light reception to talk about plants, design and more.
Wave Hill Spring Gala
Celebrate spring in Wave Hill’s beautiful gardens on Thursday, May 30 as it honors Tom de Witte, Netherlands-based international landscape designer, and kick-off the creation of a new meadow. For more information, tickets or to donate, visit the Wave Hill Spring Gala page.
Wave Hill has always been an innovator in the field of horticulture, transforming American gardening by growing bold plants in daring combinations. The cutting-edge, “beauty first” design principles pioneered by founding Director of Horticulture Marco Polo Stufano continues to this day.
Current Director of Horticulture Cathy Deutsch – who studied under Marco as an intern – carries on these revered traditions while updating techniques and materials to address sustainability, the climate crisis, biodiversity and biosecurity. Cathy is undertaking ambitious projects to expand our gardens and access, including the renovation of a 20,000 square-foot meadow. She will be collaborating with Marco and Tom de Witte on the design of the meadow and concepts to enhance adjacent areas.
From The Netherlands to Tokyo, international landscape designer Tom de Witte specializes in outdoor spaces of all sizes. His plantings, mainly of perennials and grasses, rely on his vast knowledge to create a layered landscape throughout the seasons. His work has been featured in publications, including Gardens Illustrated and Gardenista.
Tom’s love of plants began at a young age. He graduated from the Academy in Gent and studied for four years at the Horticulture College in Boskoop. He has worked collaboratively with renowned Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf, who Tom describes as his mentor, on both public and private landscape projects for over 20 years.
