From December 1 until December 4, Miami Beach hosts Art Basel, designed by Tom Postma. Since 1970, Art Basel’s goal has been to connect the world’s premier galleries and their patrons, as well as serving as a meeting point for the international art world. Now, over forty years later, its three fairs, in Basel, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach, rank as the premier shows of their kind, presenting 20th and 21st-century art with a strong curatorial perspective.
Tom Postma Design is an Amsterdam based international leading architecture and design practice, founded in 1988 by Dutch artist Tom Postma, specializing in designing high-end temporary and permanent interiors for cultural institutions, art fairs, events, art and design related exhibitions, galleries, shops and private residences. Tom Postma Design is renowned for its contemporary design style with each design resulting from the starting point that the architecture should never compete with the art. Postma made longstanding designs for venerable art fairs, such as TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and more recently, TEFAF New York in October 2016, Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Basel Hong Kong. He also works with various international galleries and with the Rijksmuseum.
Among Postma’s other accomplishments are the design of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, various international shops such as that of renowned gallerist Jorge Welsh in London and the design of the Dr. Mansour Art Center in Khartoum, Sudan, a spacious Art Center that accommodates an exhibition space, presentation room, library, restaurant and provides a platform for exchange, reflection and discussion. Postma has designed many exhibitions in prominent museums such as Treasures of the Kremlin, Staatliche kunstsammlungen, Dresden (2013), Bibliothèque de Genève: Affiches Art Nouveau, special exhibition Salon des Antiquaires, Lausanne (2014) and TEFAF’s 2015 special exhibition Night Fishing, a curated show of work by postmodern and contemporary artists designed to complement the TEFAF modern section. Tom Postma Design has recently been awarded the ‘Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 for High Design Quality’ for the Hemmerle exhibition-stand at TEFAF Maastricht, and has also been the recipient of the ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ title for his innovative exhibition architecture of the museum exhibition ‘Myths: Jewels Today’ in the Pinakothek der Moderne in 2007.
