Limited edition replicas of Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces will debut in the U.S. at the LA Art Show in January.

In the summer of 2013, the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam was the first museum to introduce top-quality reproductions of Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces. These reproductions, entitled Relievos, are of such excellent quality that they resemble the original work very closely.

Up to now, the following five paintings have been selected for the production of relievos: Almond blossom (1890), Sunflowers (1889), The harvest (1888), Wheatfield under thunderclouds (1890) and Boulevard de Clichy (1887).

New generation of reproductions
The colours, structure and size of the original masterpieces have been reproduced by means of highly sophisticated technology. This innovative technology goes by the name of Reliefography. It is a combination of a 3D scan of the painting and a high-resolution print.  Over the years, various seals were added to the back of the original masterpieces. These are also found on the Relievos. Each Relievo is numbered and certified by one of the curators of the museum.

Axel Rüger, director of the Van Gogh Museum: “Since the opening of our museum we have been selling reproductions. Thanks to this highly innovative and sophisticated technology, we have now launched a new generation. This is consistent with our strategy and the way in which we perceive ourselves as entrepreneurs in the cultural sector. In addition, we make Van Gogh’s works far more accessible and we inspire the audience in a completely novel manner.”

This innovative new technology, known as Reliefography was developed by Fujifilm Belgium. The state of the art process combines a precise three-dimensional edition of the painting’s actual surface texture with a high-resolution print. Each piece is produced as a limited edition of 260, which includes imaging of both the front and back of the painting, as well as a museum quality frame. Minute details such as the stickers on the back stretcher bars, that indicate where and when the painting has been exhibited throughout the world, are also included. The entire production process is subject to strict quality control procedures that are managed and overseen by experts at the Van Gogh Museum and Fujifilm Belgium.
