From November 21 until December 21, artist Paulien Lethen will exhibit her work in Art 101 Gallery, Williamsburg.
The final show of the year in Art 101 Gallery honors this very special artist and key figure in the Williamsburg Art community. Lethen will show new works from November 21 to December 21, with an opening reception on November 21, from 6 to 9 pm.
Lethen, born in The Netherlands, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Arnhem and lived on the Greek island of Paros and in Kyoto, Japan, before she moved to New York in 1982. After settling in Williamsburg, she founded the Holland Tunnel Gallery in 1997. She has curated shows at the Holland Tunnel Gallery both here and at the gallery extension in Paros, Greece, along with long-term shows at Stairsmasters, in the the stairwell of her brownstone — leaving little time for her own work. A fruitful summer in Paros produced these evocative new paintings — the forms float on the walls — abstract? human? landscape?
Lethen feels that the work ”reflects the influences of the different worlds she has lived in: Greece, New York, Japan and the Netherlands.
The Holland Tunnel Gallery Book, a history of the gallery, has just been published and will be available at the exhibition.
